Demand A World Without Nuclear Weapons

"The world has enough nuclear weapons. In fact, we could use a lot less. The United States has 10,500 nuclear weapons. Russia has 14,000.

But the arms race is long since over, and it’s time we reduce the stockpiles and secure the materials before they fall into the wrong hands.

This past April, President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) which, if ratified by the U.S. Senate will reduce each country’s nuclear stockpile by a third, and open up both nations’ programs for more transparent inspections and verification.

Despite the historic opportunity, this treaty has been stalled in the Senate for 7 months....."

I've added my name to an international group of individuals supporting a very simple goal at the 2010 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) negotiations in Nagoya, Japan this October:

We must protect and effectively manage at least 25 percent of Earth's land and inland waters and 15 percent of marine ecosystems by 2020.

We can’t protect life without also protecting the places where it lives. Currently, only 12.9% of the world’s terrestrial areas are under formal protection. Less than 1% of the oceans are protected.

We can do better. We must urge global leaders to take a powerful stand. This October, world leaders will gather in Nagoya, Japan, for negotiations on the global Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The attendees of this meeting have the power to take binding action to preserve life around the world.

Did you know the current law regulating toxic chemicals was passed in 1976? And it hasn't changed since, even though 20,000 new chemicals have come onto the market since then.

Only now is the true scale of the disaster emerging. Reports now suggest as many as 50,000 people may have died, with hundreds of thousands made homeless.

The work ahead to recover from this tragedy is immense. So here's our goal: $890 million for Haiti. That's how much Haiti owes to the International Monetary Fund, the Inter-American Development Bank, and a handful of others.

Virtual March on Washington -- Pickens Plan

I am concerned about the high percentage of our oil that comes from foreign countries. Even in December, as the economy was contracting, we imported nearly 70 percent of the oil we used and paid over $19 billion for it.

President Obama and the 111th Congress need to enact an energy plan that reduces our foreign oil dependence by at least 30% within ten years.

This plan must include proven American technology and resources; the development of new energy sources; and the expansion and modernization of the national electrical grid to transport renewable energy to homes and businesses.

On April 1-3, I will be joining T. Boone Pickens' and his army of supporters in a "Virtual March on Washington" in support of true Energy Independence for America. Will you join me?
